This weekend in Advent, we rejoice on Gaudete Sunday (December 14), the Third Sunday of Advent, inviting us to rejoice in the Lord's coming salvation amid patient waiting. On Saturday December 13, we honor Saint Lucy, virgin and martyr, whose unfading light symbolizes hope piercing Advent's expectant darkness, as she kept her lamp lit for the Bridegroom. Echoing "Advent Hope in the Waiting," Isaiah's vision of the desert blooming, the blind seeing, and the lame leaping foreshadows Christ's works—blind receiving sight, lame walking, and good news to the poor—which Jesus affirms to John's disciples, urging us to take no offense at Him. Saint Lucy calls us to purity and endurance, her martyrdom reminding us that God's mercy lifts veils of doubt and sin, turning wilderness into joy.
On Sunday, Saint John of the Cross, priest and Doctor, complements this with his ascent through the "dark night" to God's mountain, reformed by trials and aflame with love. James exhorts patience like the farmer awaiting rain, strengthening hearts for the near Judge, exemplified by prophets' suffering. Jesus praises John the Baptist as greatest yet surpassed by kingdom's least, fulfilling Elijah's return. In daily trials, let these saints inspire trust: blossom in God's plan, endure with hope, and sing everlasting joy as sorrow flees.
Prayer: Merciful Father, through Saints Lucy's light and John's dark night, stir our hearts to rejoice in Your saving love. Amen.
